Special Day

Guess what happened on this date in history? I will give you 3 guesses but the first 2 don’t count.

Happy Birthday to my Dad! That’s right, 80 years ago today there burst forth such an energy into the universe…We did our part celebrating your 8 decades by having an eating frenzy wonderfully worthy of Wacky Wednesday’s at the Academy. See- we are trying to brighten the dismal zoom doom gloom days of the remote vibe all day with some virtually wacky dietary celebrations. On Wednesdays. And today…being the Principal’s father’s birthday meant we had to have corn dogs and Oreos for lunch. Talk about happiness. Smiles for miles around here today. The Corndog, Oreo combination, with Grandpa’s birthday, has brought the proverbial crowd to its feet with thunderous roars of approval ringing around the North Shore. The only other sound drowning out the Principal’s thoughts on this great day seems to be the basketball pounding the pavement as Grampa’s Granddaughter shoots another 3.

My calm, patient, wise, and devoted dad -who has more amazing nerf basketball moves than Kobe Bryant ever thought of having- often tells me to file things away for future reference. Like, when I was a teenager, I am pretty sure that he filed 1,000 important notes of information into my head…for future reference. And I have to say, that as I nearly catch up to my dad’s age…I have found that 100% of the time he was right. That whatever nugget of info, or tip, or teach-to, or perspective, or mindset I needed to have- it was there. And he was right. Which is hysterical to me because he also likes to say that, “Your mother is always right”. So now I am confused. Who’s wrong if everyone is always right?

But seriously, my dad has a penchant for saying the right thing at the right time. And it usually cracked us up at the dinner table. Which of course was where we learned to do things the right way. I think. Of course, if Corn Dogs and Oreos are what’s for lunch…

  1. Your description of your dad makes me miss my father even more – as his wisdom still overshadows all of our lives. How did 2 brothers, 10 years apart, end up so similar? Makes me wish I had more time with their father, but alas, he was gone when I was only 7……

  2. That is beautiful. So even though at the moment you believe what you say is falling on deaf ears, don’t let whatever you say come back and bite you.
