Is there a better month than June? I know here at the Donadoni Academy it is hype, lit, fire, or whatever. I used to have a Ms. T-Rod that kept me hip with the lingo but Wally does not seem to have the same penchant for practicing speech patterns of adolescents. But, don’t let me get distracted from the reason for Celebrations Galore in June. And today the Academy is at the pinnacle of peace for a person seeking serenity and tranquility.
The greatest gifts can come as nothing. And so when the students and even the Real Boss evacuated the school for the day, it was a magnificent moment. Silence in the hallways. Just the soft hum of a ceiling fan offering a blissful background accompaniment to the hallowed heavenly calm. (I won’t tell the students and the Real Boss that it was the best Father’s Day Gift ever…).
I know we were discussing celebrations. And so as Wally and I celebrated the serenity we practically skipped up the street to the beach. Which was probably a funny sight to see considering my tunnel vision and creaky joints. But we were happy. And filled with the sounds of silence that can only be achieved when every last student has left the building if you know what I mean.
And so there we strolled, aimlessly towards the water- not too close. It is New England in June. But the sounds of June were in the air. Lawnmowers, birds chirping, kids squealing with delight after the ice cream truck rolls by…(Maybe Mrs. Hot Dog needs a School Administrator to help with the summer crush?). But, focusing on our mission of getting to a spot on the beach, I focused a little too long in the same direction. And when you concentrate your focus on one thing, you get that tunnel vision right? Well, that can happen with decisions, and it can happen when you are ready to plow into a poor woman sitting on the beach reading her book. Look, (ironic word choice) I know that I was watching where I was going. But I didn’t realize that Wally’s love of the sand was going to interfere with someone else’s place of peace. I spend a lot of time creating an environment where peace and quiet can coexist. And here I was destroying and absolutely crushing the tranquility of this poor lady. Oh well.
We just wanted to celebrate the end of the school year, Father’s Day, My MOM’s Birthday, my guardian saint’s feast day, the Yankees finally won a series day and all the other reasons we party in June.
As a good administrator, I was able to keep moving after breaking up the lady’s quest for quiet to read her book and move things along. Wally was as oblivious as I was to why someone would choose to sit in a low beach chair well below the vision of anyone over two feet tall. But I guess if people want to take their life into their own hands so be it. So we made our way to our favorite tree and sat down. Awkward glances provided confirmation that we had indeed stumbled across and over another human. But it seemed as though we had reached a truce and not turned our awkwardness into a “beach rage” incident. See, stuff happens and you just keep moving. Even if you want to move into the tree and not just chill under it’s shade.
It makes sense that June is the month that moves faster and more frenzied than ever because, after all it is named after my late mother-in-law. Heck, she raced around a kitchen and laundry room faster than June can bring you graduation parties and family reunions. I am sure she is smiling today. That’s good. Because the lady we ran over really wasn’t.
But I know the celebrations of June around here are gonna be off the hook and lit like a fire and…so I need to take a nap now. Thanks for Coming!
